Question:

Blackbird behaviour? Hiding in the trees but still chirping to get my attention?

I have a treee facing my window - one of the garden blackbirds today was hiding perched on the tree but he seemed to be hiding - he was trying to hide behind the leaves but was chirping faintly looking at me as if trying to get my attention. Usually he's very proud and stands tall and exposed. I saw the local cat walk by - they had previously had a face to face confrontation a few days before - I'm assuming that he's trying to hide from the cat - but why was he still trying to get me attention? Thanks in advance.

  1. Great question, I am feeling really fed up today so it gave me a smile as I often look at the birds in the garden, as to why he/she is hiding I have no idea but I know that most people would not even take the time to wonder why. As for the cat, you know what he is thinking, he has a vision of the bird on a plate and a knife and fork.

  2. Blackbirds are great - I have one in my garden that now eats out of my hand.

It's a warning - they tend to do this a lot when the young leave the nest - they are not hiding - they are on look out duty.

They also do this if there are Sparrowhawks around (something that uses my garden as a hunting ground regularly) -

Could also be waiting for his food - my Blackbird sits on the chair in the garden by the back window at 6.00am everyday - then when he hears me get up - he literally jumps up and down to get his breakfast. No, I'm not joking.

He also brings the baby birds along now and I have two of those feeding out of my hand.
