Blackburn Rovers manager Steve Kean said he believed it was crucial for his side to ensure the fitness of striker Yakubu if they wanted to avoid relegation.

Kean was certain Yakubu would go on to play a big role in Blackburn Rovers revival this season, but the manager revealed the player had to be fit for the Rovers to realize their dreams. The Scotsman admitted they were taking special care of the Nigerian
hit-man.
Kean said in an interview:
“It is fairly obvious. When you see the amount of goals he has got now, we are desperate to keep him fit.
We look after him. He is in as good a physical condition as he has been in his career and we manage him during the week.”
The Rovers boss admitted the striker sometimes needed more time to recover since he was working so hard as the lone striker. He revealed how Yakubu was instructed to remain in the box and not to make too many runs since it could lead to a possible injury.
He revealed:
“There are times when we need to give him an extra recovery day because of the amount of mileage he is doing.
We don't ask him to run to the channels. We just ask him to play the width of the box. We know if we can give him good service, he can get himself some goals.”
As for his side scoring enough goals, Kean was certain that was not the problem. Kean pointed out how his side had scored in all the fixtures this season but had lost due to conceding easy goals.
Kean continued:
“We don't have a problem scoring goals. We always score.”
