The 32-year-old midfielder recently signed a contract extension in the January transfer window which will keep him at the club until the summer. Kean however, is looking beyond his retirement and believes the player will return to the club as a coach in the near future.
Despite being close to retirement, Dunn is still a key player for the Rovers. The midfielder proved his worth when he came off as a substitute to score the equalizing goal against Aston Villa in the 1-1 stalemate in the English Premier League fixture over the weekend.
Kean was hopeful the player would join his backroom staff after he finally decided to retire as a player and remain at Blackburn Rovers. According to the Scottish manager, a player like Dunn was hard to find, someone who had spent over ten years with the same club.
Kean said while speaking to reporters:
“David Dunn is not only a player now. He's signed a new contract so he's a player-stroke-staff member. We're going to be helping him get through his coaching education.
We feel that when he stops playing - which we hope will be many years away - he will still be a coach at the club for whatever age group or whatever team, working with the first team, reserves or academy.”
Dunn began his career with Blackburn Rovers in 1998, after graduating from the Youth Academy and went on to play for them until 2003. He joined Birmingham City in 2003, returning to Ewood Park in 2007 and has been there since then.
According to Kean, Dunn has continued to play a big role for the Blackburn Rovers in the English Premier League and revealed he would have given the midfielder a start against Aston Villa had he not had a slight injury. He revealed he was looking forward to having Dunn with him in the coaching staff soon due to his excellent leadership skills.
He continued:
"And now looking at the game in a coaching capacity can really help him. He can almost be a player-coach on the pitch so I think that's going to be really important for us.”
