Blackburn Rovers boss unhappy with defence
Blackburn Rovers manager Sam Allardyce has said that he was disappointed by the defensive errors that led to his side being dumped out of the Carling Cup.
Allardyce had been hoping for victory over their English Premier League rivals Aston Villa in the third-round match, but Blackburn could not hold on to the lead given to them by Gael Givet’s strike. Emile Heskey scored within a minute of coming on as a substitute
before winger Ashley Young netted twice in quick succession to give the Villans a 3-1 win at Villa Park.
The result marks the third time that Blackburn has been dumped out of a domestic cup competition by the Birmingham club in two seasons, after Villa emerged triumphant when the sides met in both the Carling Cup and FA Cup last season.
The loss to Villa was the latest of several matches in which Blackburn has been unable to hold on to a lead. Allardyce told reporters that, “We've gone in front in six games out of seven and haven't been able to hold onto things. A game lasts 90 minutes,
not 45 and it's frustrating for us. We couldn't cope with Villa's change in shape. We must be more resilient defensively and just keep working away at things."
Blackburn are currently sitting in 14th place in the EPL, having claimed five points from their five games so far. After beating Everton on the opening day of the season, they lost away to Birmingham City and at home to Arsenal before drawing against both
Manchester City and Fulham.
Alladryce’s men have a run of games coming up which will give them a chance to stop the rot. They face Blackpool away before games against Stoke City, Sunderland and the struggling Liverpool.
