Blackburn Rovers boss Steve Kean had previously hinted on Emerton’s departure, admitting the player desired a move back to Australia. He said Sydney FC has shown interest and that talks were going on, claiming he would be open to a move if Emerton wanted

Kean said in an interview:
“With Brett there has been interest from his hometown club and we have had a bit of dialogue. If Brett does move it will be a family decision, not a football decision.”
Scott Barlow, the Sydney FC vice-chairman revealed the club had been eyeing Emerton for a while and were extremely pleased to have finally acquired his services. After negotiations, the Premier League club agreed to release Emerton from his existing contract
with the club, which makes him free to leave for Sydney FC.
