Blackburn Rovers owners pledge support for Sam Allardyce
The new owners of English Premier League outfit Blackburn Rovers claim that Sam Allardyce has their full support.
The club were taken over by Indian poultry firm Venky's — itself owned by the Rao family — for a sum of £23m. They bought out 99.9 per cent of the shares owned by the Jack Walker Trust to take a majority
shareholding of the Ewood Park side.
Allardyce's team are currently in 11th place in the EPL and, while Venky's is pleased with that, it is ready to back Allardyce when the transfer window reopens for business in January to try and achieve
qualification for the UEFA Europa League.
The company's chairman, Anuradha Desai, told reporters: "We want results and Sam has taken up the challenge. He deserves a chance. Most of the time the team has been between eighth and 10th in the rankings.
Only once it went out of the league.
"With the right motivation I feel they can go higher than eighth. Who is to say they cannot do better than that, say fifth or sixth position, why not? To this end the group have promised manager Allardyce
funds to spend in the January transfer window. Some money has been put aside in improving the health of the club.”
The club won the EPL title in the 1994-95 season, but they only have a League Cup win in 2002 to their name since then. While the new owners are looking to invest and grow the club, other EPL sides — particularly
Manchester City and Chelsea — can call upon their billionaire owners to buy the world's best players, and so Rovers will find it tough to win any silverware in the forseeable future.
Their next opportunity to move up the league table will come when they travel to face Manchester United at Old Trafford on Saturday 27 November.
