Roberto Lago, the 26-year-old Celta Vigo defender, revealed he was not aware of the interest from English Premier League side Blackburn Rovers. The Rovers have reportedly sent scouts to watch the left-back for a possible move in the upcoming January transfer window.
However, Lago has denied any knowledge of Blackburn Rovers chasing his signature. The Spaniard insisted he had not been in contact with the English club and had only read of their interest in the local newspaper like everyone else, suggesting it was just speculation.
Lago said while speaking to reporters:
“I've read the stories in the papers, but my agent has not communicated anything new to me.”
Lago graduated from the Celta youth academy, beginning his senior football career with the Celta B side in 2004. After three years of playing for the B side, the defender finally managed to earn a place in the first team, making his debut in 2007.
He has made a total of 128 appearances for Celta in addition to scoring five goals in the league, since making his debut in 2005. The Spanish defender is contracted to the Segunda Division until the end of the 2013-2014 season and it is not yet clear whether or not Celta are interested in selling.
It seems highly unlikely though, especially since Celta are targeting promotion to the La Liga in the current season and would not want to lose one of their key players halfway through the season. There have not yet been any negotiations and the Rovers are simply keeping an eye on Lago.
After a terrible start to the new season, Blackburn Rovers are in need of further reinforcements in the winter transfer window. They have managed to secure just four points from their opening six games in the Premier League, which has led to discontent amongst the fans.
A section of supporters went as far as organizing a protest against the Blackburn Rovers manager Steve Kean before the clash against http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Arsenal-c38429 at Ewood Park. It so happened that the Rovers went on to establish a win against the Gunners, but since then have gone on to lose to Newcastle United in their last Premier League fixture.
