Blackburn confirm interest in Diego Maradona for manager's job
Blackburn’s new owners, the Venky group, have confirmed they contacted Diego Maradona to coach the side following the sacking of Sam Allardyce two days ago. The Indian group acquired the club recently for 43 million pounds. Allardyce's sacking came just
25 days into their reign, sending shockwaves throughout the Premier League. The move was surprising since Blackburn occupied a respectable position in the league table.
It seems that the new owners want to re-establish the club as a force to be reckoned with. In a statement, they said, "We want good football and Blackburn to be fourth or fifth in the league or even better. The fans should trust us because this is in the
best interests of the club."
Following Sam Allardyce’s departure, there has been much speculation as to who will take over the reigns at the club. Argentinean legend Diego Maradona was one of the names mentioned in connection with the job. The club has now confirmed that talks have
been held with the volatile Argentinean, however, nothing has been finalized as yet.
In a statement, chairperson Anuradha Desai said, "We thought about Maradona as a coach after we took over. Talks were at the initial stage then, but there is no development on that front yet. For now, the current coach will be the manager till the end of
the season. There is no question of signing anyone for such a short time."
Maradona has been a controversial figure in recent times. His stint as the head coach of Argentina at the FIFA world cup in South Africa brought mixed results, ultimately culminating in the side’s spectacular loss to Germany in the semi-finals. After the
tournament, he was replaced by Sergio Batisita. Maradona has made clear his intentions of returning to a managerial role in the future.
First team coach Steve Kean is currently acting as caretaker manager for the club. Blackburn owners insist that he will stay as manager for at least until the end of the current season. Can Diego Maradona be tempted out of retirement to lead Blackburn to
the heights envisioned by the club’s new owners? We will have to wait and see.
