Blackburn striker Benjani Mwaruwari hopes renewed fitness can lead to goals
Blackburn Rovers striker Benjani Mwaruwari has spoke of his hope at finally getting his career back on track after a lengthy injury-plagued spell. The Zimbabwean suffered a frustrating
time at Manchester City, where he constantly picked up injuries, leading to him eventually being released this summer, after an unsuccessful loan spell at Sunderland. Sam Allardyce has now taken a chance on the former Portsmouth man, and Benjani is determined
to start hitting the goals as his match fitness and sharpness begins to return.
“Always from a striker you expect goals. I am working very hard to get the goals. I haven’t played for a long time but now I am feeling better on the pitch and I hope I can get goals soon.
If you are a striker you need sharpness and I think I am getting there. We have lots of good strikers here and it is about working hard and when I get the chance to play to make sure I take it. I do feel more confident now. It all depends on the manager though
and the system we play, let’s hope in the future I play. I’m starting to feel my fitness is coming back and let’s hope I play more in the future. I’m almost there, I just need more playing time,” the 32-year-old told the Lancashire Telegraph.
Benjani did find the back of the net against Chelsea last time out, and he’ll be hoping he can start reproducing the form that saw him become such a favourite at Fratton Park. Despite
not being the most natural of goalscorers, he does possess a decent strike-rate in England, and fans love him for his attitude and work-rate. No doubt a fit Benjani will be an asset to Rovers, but his fitness has let him down so often of late, it is hard to
see him recreating his days on the south coast.
