Blackpool Chief Executive Karl Oyston must clarify role
The Premier League will ask Blackpool to confirm the role of Chief Executive Karl Oyston. Oyston became insolvent on the 18 August and has become bankrupt. The Premier League Owners and Directors rule states that anyone who bankrupt is not allowed to hold
the position of director or chairman.
Oyston stepped down from his role as chairman on the 18th of August and took up a position on the board. He intends to stay on the board of directors until the end of the season or until a new chairman can be found. Oyston took over the club in
1999 from his mother who was married to multi-millionaire Owen Oyston. Since then Blackpool have gained promotion into the Premier League and have adapted well to the top tier of English football. However, the stability of the club has been undermined with
the financial situation that Oyston faces.
Blackpool’s financial dealings in the transfer market have been limited and a wage cap of £10,000 a week was imposed on the squad. The Premier League now intends to make contact with the club to find out what role and capacity Oyston is working in. Oyston
is still registered as a board member and if he is to face disciplinary action, Blackpool may face another blow.
Manager Ian Holloway and his team must turn their attention away from the boardroom and focus on another tough league match. The Seagulls have started well this season, but Oyston’s position has left the club with very little cash. This instability at the
club may eventually have an affect on the club and the performance of the team despite Holloway’s efforts. This has made Holloway’s job more daunting as he tries to keep Blackpool afloat in the Premier League.
