Blacks In Argentina?

I'm thinking of going to Argentina in the near future, possibly within 2-3 years, and I know the Black/African population is quite small, but how are Blacks received and treated in Argentina? And also, is there a hip hop scene in Buenos Aires?(and I'm not talking about b.s. crunk/snap music either...I'm talkin real hip hop!)

  1. There are very few African-Argentines.

When slavery was abolished in the mid part of the XIX century many ex-slaves established themselves in Buenos Aires for a short time and most entered mixed relationships or left as Argentines (particularly those of European origin) were and still are quite racist.  It is sad but true.

What is refreshing is that the country is not politically-correct- gone-mad and most racially instigated titles are not seen as  defamatory.

There is a local hip-hop scene that is white!

  2. I lived there for two years and only saw two black people, but I also lived in smaller cities.  There is racism in Argentina, but not extreme.  They do look down on people with darker skin.  A lot of the people in Bs As have fair skin because many are European descendants.  The provinces outside of the capital are populated with more people indigenous to the country, and therefore are looked down upon by the people of Bs. As.  As far as hip hop goes, they do love American music, but real hip hop didn't seem to be too popular among the masses.  They really like hard rock.

  3. sorry i have never heard anything about blacks comunity in argentinia yet.

  4. there aren't blacks in Argentina

  5. hi,

I am from Argentina, there are not black, african people in Argentina (or perhaps only quite a few). Because of this, black people are seen as very exotic and in general (I cannot assure that is always) are treated very well. You have to know that here "*****" is said to people that have not white skin but they are not black, but they are called like that in a very friendly way... For example, in the company I used to work, we had a colleague with very dark hair, black eyes, but even with white skin and everybody called her "negrita" and she never got offended.

I am sure that you will be very well received in my country.

Regarding the 2nd part of your question, I am sorry, I cannot answer it since i don't know much about hip hop, however you must know that in Buenos Aires you will find any kind of artistic manifestation, even in music, there is a wide variety of artists, and for sure you will find what you are looking for.

In any case, check this band (it doesn't exist anymore), Illya Kuriakys and the Valderramas, perhaps it might be what you are looking for
