Question:

Blacks and Republicans: Setting the record Straight ...........?

Does anybody remember this?

In 1996 Clinton was running for his second term. The Republicans wanted Colin Powell for their nominee. News polls at the time showed Powell beating Clinton easily, no problem. The Republicans would have given us the first black President AND a war hero.

Now, Powell declined the nomination, due to his wife's personal issues which he did not want the press corps digging into. So the Repubs had to settle for Bob Dole, who lost.

So: Why does everyone call the Republicans racist when the Republicans tried to give us the first black president WHO ACTUALLY WOULD HAVE WON twelve years ago? Why does everybody look at Obama as the first black to have a chance at the Oval Office, which he clearly is not?

People need to extend their memory span a little.

  1. Don`t forget Condi if she would have run as the Republicans wanted she would also be the first black and woman in the Presidency.

  2. you need to get off the christianiaty vs Islam mindset and then maybe you can understand something

  3. I don't think Republicans are racist, I just think they're ridiculous.  The fact is that most African Americans can't relate to Republican'ts and their outlooks on class and the econmy.

  4. Great point....and I like your avatar.

Powell is 10 times better on his worst day than Obama on his best. He would have been great and I would have voted for him in a heartbeat.

Don't despair....I still say that the first black president will be a republican.

  5. Senator Edward Brooke was also a republican.

  6. Despite your interpretations, I don't think that Powell would have gotten the Republican nomination so your theories are highly conjectural.  Clinton was also a good president and a popular president.  In any case, Powell didn't run.

To some who seem confused, don't forget that Martin Luther King, Jr. urged all Americans to vote for the Democratic ticket in 1964.

Martin Luther King, Jr wrote that:

"The Republican Party geared its appeal and program to racism, reaction, and extremism."   Nothing much has changed.

Also Senator Brooke was a liberal Republican.

  7. Why is this an issue. Any one who spends time on YA knows that conservatives are fair and open minded to a fault.

Their racial tolerance is beyond reproach.

    HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

  8. Get your facts straight, as someone already posted, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. wanted people to vote Democrat. Plus, back in Lincolns day, Republicans then, were the Democrats now. As in, they were the liberal party...

  9. Not to mention that Doctor Martin Luther King Junior was a Republican!!

  10. yup Lincoln(Republican by the way) fought the war that would eventually end slavery

  11. If Bush doesn't cancel the election, Obama will be the first half-cast (half black/ half white) to sit in the Oval Office.
