i have callaway x-16 pro-series irons. I am a 9 hdcp (not cuz of iron hits.. more short game problems). i swing fairly hard. (my PW goes about 140, 9 goes bout 150.. and so on..).. my natural ball flight is a draw...friend says blade irons are a good investment. I plan on demoing two blade clubs tommorow (4 and 7 iron).. Should i waste my time w/them?

  1. Blades to me...provide more workability.  If that is what you seek in your game...then by all means.  The blades will not be quite as forgiving as the X 16's though...there will be a learning curve that will go along with this type of change.

  2. A lot of the pros do not play blades for one reason and one reason only...

    why would you?

a great set of forged cavity back irons (such as the titleist 755s or x20 forged, etc.) are a better choice. They are much more forgiving and you can still work the ball as much as you need.

(Blades are entirely for supreme workability with little to no forgiveness on off center hits, thus if you cant hit it dead center every time with the irons you have now, don't even think about it)

  3. Go for it!!!! Nothing tried nothing gained!!

I think at your level of play, blade-type irons will add an new dimension to your game.

  4. Blades will give you more feel on your shots.  You can work them left and right and hit low knock downs into the wind with them.  But  you admit that your handicap would be lower if your short game was better so I would urge you to work on that, rather than think about changing irons.  Depends on your goal.  Blades alone aren't going to lower your scores, but you might love the feel of them.

  5. i will pretty much guarantee you that you will go down at least 1 club length. Forged aren't ment for distance, but more for accuracy and workability. I did the change last year, best thing i ever did.

Ya sure when you miss-hit its going to fly, but when you hit the perfect shot, its going to be tight and give you that good feeling. With practice dont fear the forged irons, you just got to learn to adapt the smaller blades. If your going to go with blades, dont go cheap. Stick with the big 5 = Taylor Made, Callaway, Cleveland, Nike, Ping.

I would personally suggest if money isnt too much of a worry go with the Callaway X-20 Forged or the Cleveland CG1. Good luck with the game.

  6. You are approaching this game from the wrong angle. Wedges , 9,8,7,and 6 irons are scoring clubs which are finesse clubs to be hit smoothly for accuracy, not to power for distance. A smooth 7 iron will go 150 yards; a smooth 8 will carry 135 yards and a smooth 9 115 yards. You don't see the pros hitting these shots full bore, do you ? Think there may be a reason why they don't? Copy the pros with the clubs you have. Blades won't improve the game. Better, smoother swing technique is the secret.
