Blair Evans impresses in Women’s 400m IM heats: Day one – EnergyAustralia Swimming Championships
Blair Evans of City of Perth impressed her supporters by winning the qualification round of Women’s 400m Individual Medley (IM) on initial day of the 2012 EnergyAustralia Swimming Championships at the South Australia Aquatic and Leisure Centre in Adelaide
on Thursday, March 15.
The EnergyAustralia offers a chance to their national talent to race with each other and prove their eligibility in the Australian team for the 2012 London Olympic Games.
The 20-year-old Evans confronted strong battle from Samantha Hamill of Kawana Waters, who stayed prominent for the top position throughout the race but failed to handle ruthless aggression of Evans in the final lap and ended second.
The 21-year-old Hamill spoiled the party of her challengers in the initial 100 metres of the discipline as she clocked a time of 1 minute and 02.81 seconds. She remained almost 0.80 seconds ahead of Evans, who clocked a time of 1 minute and 03.67 seconds
for the similar distance.
Hamill continued her nerve-wrecking form in the subsequent round, where she extended her lead to nearly 1.50 seconds and completed her 200 metres of the swim with the timing of 2 minutes and 14.18 seconds. She was followed by Evans, who enveloped the same
distance with the timing of 2 minutes and 15.89 seconds.
With her unbeatable performance in the third round, Hamill remained nearly half body length ahead of Evans and produced a time of 3 minutes and 37.81 seconds. She remained nearly one second ahead of Evans, who covered the equivalent distance with the timing
of 3 minutes and 38.72 seconds.
The arena saw immaculate efforts of Evans in the final round, who geared up her pace and outsmarted her challengers by clocking a time of 4 minutes and 42.54 seconds. Hamill failed to sustain her pace in the final lap and posted 4 minutes and 44.11 seconds.
Subsequently, Amy Levings of Miami snared third fastest position of the discipline, as she submitted 4 minutes and 44.65 seconds.
These finalists will contend each other in the final round of the 400m IM where the top two finishers will confirm their spots in the Australian team to London.
