Blake Beavan discusses missed opportunity to complete game against Texas Rangers – MLB Update
The Seattle Mariners looked like a completely different team on Friday, September 16 when they took out the Texas Rangers 4-0 in front of the home crowd at Safeco Field in Seattle.
Blake Beavan powered the Mariners to eight scoreless innings, effectively numbing the Rangers offensive squad. He however missed an opportunity to complete the shut-out as Brandon League walked onto the mound in the ninth to finish the game.
Beavan was up for his 13th game of the season and he made everything count as he pitched curveballs with varying speed. He went on to 5-5 by allowing just four hits. He picked up three strike-outs and reduced his earned runs average to 3.92. The
player talked about the opportunity to finish the game after the match had ended.
“Well, I wanted to go out there and shut them down, and that's what I tried to do today," Beavan said. "I just had a different attitude out there, but calm."
Manager Eric Wedge opted for League to go into the ninth to finish the job. After all, any manager would be wary of the Rangers’ hitting squad, given their recent display against the Cleveland Indians.
Beavan looked like a mature professional during his stint on the mound. The 22-year-old delivered some effective curveballs to take care of the opposition. Rangers were not expecting the young player to be so menacing.
"You're talking about a 75 mph pitch compared to a 90, 93 mph pitch," Beavan said of his curveball. "When you're looking at a big difference like that and you can command both pitches, it's going to be a little tough for a guy to hit."
The Seattle manager would have liked to go on with Beavan but he was worried about the consequences of taking the rookie to the next inning. League was a safe choice for the skipper as the game ended in favour of the Mariners.
Nevertheless, with Beavan in the mix, it seems like the Mariners have someone for the future to turn to, next season.
