Blake Beavan shines as Toronto Blue Jays lose to Seattle Mariners 3-5 – MLB Update
Toronto Blue Jays were defeated by the red hot Seattle Mariners 3-5 at Safeco Field in Seattle, Washington on Wednesday, August 1 in the finale of their three match series of the 2012 Major League Baseball regular season.
Colby Rasmus homered to right-centre in the first inning to provide the Blue Jays with an excellent start. Kelly Johnson added a solo home-run to centre in the fourth to double the lead to 2-0.
"Again, they bunched some hits together to manufacture some runs," Toronto manager John Farrell said. "They are playing with a lot of confidence. They're playing very well."
Jesus Montero, who has given some incredible performances since the start of the season, grounded into double-play and Dustin Ackley scored to put Seattle on the board. Jeff Mathis hit a sacrifice fly to centre in the fifth to extend the restore the two
run lead but the Blue Jays were unable to take advantage of the early momentum.
Mariners’ left fielder Eric Thames connected for a two run home-run to centre in the fifth to level the score 1-1. John Jaso earned an RBI single to centre to help Seattle come back from behind for a vital 4-3 lead. Ackley singled to left in the seventh
to help Mariners end the game on an aggressive note.
"Seemed like his fastball was his fourth pitch," Jaso said.
"I went to the homer-less territory, from what everybody says," Thames said.
Blue Jays’ starting pitcher Carlos Villanueva took his first loss of the season after giving up four runs and seven hits in six innings. His counterpart from the Mariners, Blake Beavan won for the seventh time, giving up just three runs in seven plus innings.
"I don't think the clubhouse has been this exciting in a while," Beavan said. "We're all just jumping around like little elementary (school) kids in recess."
"Obviously, we saw early on they were going to be very aggressive with him," Seattle manager Eric Wedge said.
Striking-out four batters, Beavan played a key role in deciding the outcome of the clash on Wednesday.
The Mariners will be happy with their performance as they managed to get their offence going and take a decisive win against the Blue Jays.
