Blake Beavan shines on debut as Seattle Mariners defeat San Diego Padres 3-1 – MLB Update
Blake Beavan had an outstanding debut as the Seattle Mariners rode on his performance to defeat the San Diego Padres in a low-scoring match at Safeco Field in Seattle, Washington on Sunday, July 3.
Beavan had a dream Major League debut as he hushed the Padres with his steaming pitches. He took his time but once he settled on the mound, there was no looking back.
In his debut game, Beavan pitched seven innings for a total of 90 pitches. He managed 64 strikes and gave away only three hits. The only run he conceded came in the third inning off Alberto Gonzalez helped by Will Venable’s double.
Beavan struck-out four batters and posted an ERA of 1.29 in his debut game, a feat which is not easy to achieve.
The experienced Mat Latos was not as efficient as Beavan for the San Diego Padres. Latos was unruly with his pitching and leaked three crucial runs at an ERA of 4.26. Ichiro Suzuki controlled the scoring for the Mariners as he added
two runs for the home side. He added the first run in the first inning before coming back in the third to add a second. Brendan Ryan helped the Mariners to their third run in the third inning and this proved to be the last score of the game.
Beavan’s heroics earned him a well-deserved win in his first game of MLB whereas Latos lost his ninth game this season. Latos now has a pitiful win-loss record of 5-9 and needs to pull up his socks in the second-half of the season
for the Padres to yield better results.
The 22-year-old Beavan is renowned for his control and he displayed exactly that. He focused on pitching in the right areas and did not experiment much with his deliveries, throwing mainly the slider and the fastball. He rarely used
the sinker and surprised the batters with his new curveball he developed during his Triple-A stint with Tacoma.
After the game, Beavan sided with humility and attributed his success to untiring hard-work. He expressed his feelings after the game and said, "It was definitely a great feeling being out there on that mound."
Beavan had to fill the shoes of Erik Bedard and his performance depicted that he is one for the Majors. Talking about his nerves, he commented that the presence of his parents at the facility helped him calm his nerves and settle in
quickly.
The Mariners won the three-game series 2-1 and are now showing some character moving into the second-half of the season. Their win-loss record in improving at 41-43 and will be hopeful of more such performances to achieve the .500
mark.
