  1. Nadal and Blake have only played on hard courts, and though Blake leads the contest barely, Nadal has won both of their matches in 2008. So, I believe the answer to your question is Nadal has become a better hard court player and consequently a better all around player, which is why he is now number 1.  He moves better on the hard stuff now and has had fewer knee problems, as a result.

  2. It's a stylistic difference in their respective games.

Blake hits the ball very early (on the up-rise) so Nadal's topspin is usually neutralized. Blake also hits the ball flat off both wings and he is arguably faster on a hardcourt than even Nadal. Blake plays a high risk game that makes if very difficult for a difficult for a player who stands as far back as Nadal to control the rally when Blake is on his game. On a claycourt, Nadal would crush Blake but on hardcourts, Blake definetely has the advantage.

The reason why Nadal is more successful against Federer is because Federer relies on court positioning, consistency and variety to try to beat Nadal. But Federer doesn't hit the ball as early as Blake so Nadal's topspin keeps Federer in a defensive position. Nadal bullies most of the players (including Federer) around the court by keeping them pinned behind the baseline.

Nadal has improved a lot on hardcourts and now he is probably a match for Blake on that surface. If were to meet at the US Open, I'd give both of them about a 50/50 chance. I still think that Novak Djokovic is the best hardcourt player in the world right now, followed by Roger Federer. Nadal is a distant third with Blake, Davydenko and Roddick rounding out the top six.

  3. I think Blake has had a good record against Nadal because Blake takes the ball fairly early (on the rise), which takes time away from Nadal to hit his shots. Nadal stands pretty far behind the baseline, although less so these days, but if Blake is taking the ball early and not letting Nadal's balls kick up too high or let them drop, and Nadal is standing a bit further behind the baseline, Blake has an advantage in the points.

Also, Blake doesn't seem to mind Nadal's topspin, which kicks up a bit and actually probably fits into Blakes strike zone (Blake generally hits the ball around waist height or a little higher).

The other factor is a positive mental edge for Blake.

  4. they've never played against each other on clay, they've only played in hard courts
