Blank screen instaed of desktop

Question

I am seeing a blank screen after booting up. After powering on the notebook, i can see window bar progressing, prompts to enter the password and after entering the password, welocme screen appears followed with a blank screen with only mouse pointer visbile.

Let me know the action item for this issue. I am using a HP Pavillion DV6707us model notebook running Vista32
