Blanka Vlasic looks forward to reclaim her lost glory – Athletics news
It goes without saying that it is not difficult to attain the top position, but it is indeed difficult to retain it. This is the challenge Blanka Vlasic, the 27-year-old Croatian high jumper is facing, as the reigning Croatian national record holder had
been undefeated at the Samsung Diamond League Competition until just about two weeks ago.
However, for having an opportunity to remerge, she must be planning to outdo her rivals at the women’s High Jump contest that is being hosted at Split, her hometown in Croatia.
Appearing at a competition that is being organised in her hometown is rather important for the ‘World Athlete of the Year - 2010’ for two reasons. First, this is the place where she can expect to find the staunchest supporters of her, which can provide her
the much needed encouragement which may boost her confidence to reclaim her lost status.
Secondly, two years ago, this was the very place where she has had marked some of the best performances of hers and being used to with the field can certainly be of great help for the winner of the World Junior Championships in Athletics in 2000 and 2002.
Provided her popularity and likeness among the local crowd, it is a given fact that upon the news of her appearing in the event, people will swarm to the Spaladium Arena of Split. This is the same venue where she has already bagged two of the women High
Jump events back in 2009 and 2010. This year, at a place which brought her three victories out of four times, she may have to encounter the fiercest challenge of her entire career at the given venue.
Top athletes are looking forward to hinder the silver medallist of the 2006 World Indoor Championships from initiating with another spell of her winning streaks. The event will comprise of Swede Emma Green-Tregaro, the formidable athlete who had put an end
to the ongoing wins of Vlasic in New York on June 11, for marking a huge stride of 1.94m under damp weather conditions. Continuing with her performance, Green, the 26-year-old athlete from Sweden had also bagged this Sunday’s European Team Championships.
Another major threat that the daughter of the veteran decathlon athlete, Josko Vlasic, is expected to face on the field is Svetlana Shkolina from Russia, the winner of the Moscow Challenge held on June 12, where she marked the best stride of the contest
for hitting the 1.95m mark.
At this moment of her career, Vlasic is facing a ‘do or die’ situation and she will have to disregard the formidable challengers and completely focus on taking advantage of performing before her hometown crowd.
