Question:

Blankets at bedtime?

Ok, so I know that you're not supposed to have a blanket in the crib with baby (and I do when it is cold out), but my question is for the parents who co-sleep (and I do sometimes in the mornings after hubby leaves), do you cover baby up with YOUR blanket while you're sleeping? He gets covered in my duvet (not feather) as he is sleeping curled up to me.

Also why are they not allowed blankets in their cribs (I understand them getting tangled once they can roll) but we live in Canada and it is COLD in the winter, doesnt he need one??

thanks in advance!!

  1. We co-sleep and I put our blanket over my son. When he sleeps by himself he used his own blanket as well. I just kind of tuck it under is arms. Works well for us.

  2. Blankets are ok as long as they are tucked in firmly. Doonas (duvets) are a no no as they not only create a suffocation risk but also can cause bubs to overheat as they don't really breath.

I use baby sleeping bags kind of like this one but with sleeves fhttp://www.babyinabag.com/   for my daughter as she kicks the blankets off anyway. Here's the sids and kids recommendation for making up a cot

My daughter also comes into our bed in the morning when hubby goes to work. SHe has a feed then we both go back to sleep. I just cover her to her waist

  3. I always use a blanket on mine. my first slept with me as my husband works 3rd shift so it was just me and baby home at night and i would cover her with my blanket shes 4 now . with our new baby she sometimes sleeps with me and i also have a play yard with a bassinet on it next to the bed and i will pull the blanket tight across her and tuck it in the sides and i have a wedge thing that she sleeps on and i out her arms above the side so she cant move .

  4. They suggest not putting blankets in their cribs because of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome otherwise known as SIDS. They could roll and suffocate themselves in the blanket. I used a sheet on my children and just checked on them at night. Also if I put them in bed with me, I covered them up to about their waist. The most important thing is checking on them.

  5. When I co sleep with my kids I do not put a blanket on my baby but I do not use one either. I live in a very cold climate too. What we do is keep the heat on warm enough and dress the baby warm. What I found helps the most is getting a bed canopy or even just improvising one with some blankets hung over the head of the bed. This will keep the heat in, especially the heat from your breath and you and baby will stay plenty warm.

  6. I believe it is because they could sufficate.  I have always used blankets with my babies.  If it got cold, I would put them in a heavier sleeper, and use a recieving blanket.  Most of the time my kids don't stay covered anyways.
