Blas Bacardo, Morgan Faulkner and Rafael Pereira prevail in Round 2 at Quiksilver Surf Open Acapulco
Mexico’s Blas Bacardo, Hawaii’s Morgan Faulkner and Venezuela’s Rafael Pereira successfully secured their place in the third round (Round of 64) at the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) 4-Star Quiksilver Surf Open Acapulco after claiming top honours
in their respective Round 2 (Round of 96) heats that went down at Playa Revolcadero in Acapulco, Mexico, on Wednesday, July 18.
Mexico’s Diego Cadena, Hawaii’s Landon McNamara and Venezuela’s Jean s******r also managed to advance through into the next round of the competition after claiming runner-up positions in their respective Round 2 heats.
The stage was set for a series of thrilling contests on the second day of the competition. There were clean two-to-four foot waves breaking at the primary event site, presenting an ideal canvas for the surfers to paint with their exquisite skills.
The eighth heat saw Bacardo take on his compatriot Cadena, Hawaii’s Kaimana Jaquias and Venezuela’s Ulio Nurse in a four-man battle for the Round 3 spot. While the foreign talent failed to make much of an impact during the course of the battle and only managed
to finish with a heat-total of 6.87 and 2.57 points respectively, the Mexican surfers put on an impressive show.
Bacardo got his paws on two right-handers and utilised them to exhibit a flurry of solid tricks to eventually register a heat-total of 14.83 points. The effort proved superior to that of his rivals and thus allowed him to walk away with the win.
“I stayed relaxed and patient out there and found those two barrels,” Bacardo said. “I’m really happy to make it to the next round and hopefully I can keep going.”
Cadena put on an impressive performance as well and eventually finished with a heat-total of 11.20 points to move into the next round.
The ninth heat saw Faulkner prevail in what turned out to be a low-scoring affair. The Hawaiian surfer registered a modest heat-total of 7.17 points, but it turned out to be adequate to put him in first place.
McNamara secured runner-up place after finishing with a heat-total of 6.37 points, thus accompanying his compatriot into the next round.
Peru’s Alvaro Malpartida and Venezuela’s Colin Saunders rounded out the bottom-two positions with a two-wave total of 4.90 and 3.33 points respectively, which consequently led to their removal from the contention for the event title.
The 10th heat saw Pereira walk away with the win after finishing with a heat-total of 9.00 points, while Schaffar’s two-wave total of 8.80 points proved sufficient to put him in second place.
America’s Adam Goldstone finished third with a heat-total of 6.70 points, while Mexico’s Quetzal Estrada rounded out the bottom-position with a heat-total of 6.04 points.
The ASP 4-Star Quiksilver Surf Open Acapulco continued with the remaining Round 2 heats on Wednesday.
