Blaz Kavcic ousts Tobias Kamke in the first round of the Serbia Open
World number 85 Blaz Kavcic of Slovenia outshined the 78th ranked German, Tobias Kamke in the opening round clash of the Serbia Open at the Tennis Center Novak complex in Belgrade, Serbia on Monday. The unseeded Slovenian
took one hour and forty eight minutes to conclude his straight sets victory 7-6(0), 6-1 and book a berth in the second round of the ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) World Tour 250 event.
The 24-year-old Kavcic continued his magnificent run against Kamke this season, defeating him for the second consecutive occasion in less than two weeks time. Kamke suffered a straight sets defeat at the hands of Kavcic last week
in the opening round at Barcelona and again a week later, this time at Belgrade. He hung in the opener till the end, dragging the set into a tie breaker round but slumped from there onwards and never recovered in the rest of the contest. Kamke failed to score
a single point in the tie breaker and held his serve just once in the second set before accepting a humiliating ejection from the Serbia Open.
Kavcic coughed five double faults in the game but the bleak German didn’t capitalise upon the mistakes of his opponent and kept executing errant strokes under pressure. The Slovenian reeled off 36 out of 49 first serve points in
the game and crafted 12 break chances, converting four of them en route to victory. A part from some minor mistakes in the game, his overall performance was quite satisfying.
Intense tennis was witnessed in the opening set of the contest, with the two contestants labouring hard to get the netter of their opponent. The opener went on neck-to-neck with both men exchanging two serve breaks each. Momentum
kept oscillating in the game and Kamke’s second serve break enforced a tie breaker round at 6-6. Kavcic proved devastating in the tie breaker and nabbed seven consecutive points to bag the opener at 7-6(0).
The German had no chance against the fury of Kavcic in the next set and proved to be a wall of sand against him. Kavcic clinched 15 of 18 first serve points in the second set and kept pushing Kamke out of the competition. Two serve
breaks from the Slovenian proved sufficient for him to close the contest at 6-1 in the most assertive manner.
Kavcic will square off against either Ricardo Mello of Brazil or the fifth seed American, John Isner in the second round of the Serbia Open.
