Blaz Kavcic takes 2nd round spot after hard fought battle against Vagnozzi – Palermo Challenger 2011
Seventh seeded Blaz Kavcic from Slovakia defeated Italian, Simone Vagnozzi, in the 1st round of 2011 Palermo Challenger on Tuesday, 4th October. The match was conducted in Palermo, Italy and lasted two hours
and 29 minutes. Kavcic, ranked 96th in the world secured a 7-5, 4-6, 6-2 win over the 168th ranked Italian.
Kavcic is much more experienced compared to Simone. He was promoted to pro in 1999 and is 28 years of age. Simone, on the other hand, was promoted to pro in 2005 and is aged 24 at the moment. However, neither player have clinched
a title win yet.
Simone unexpectedly gave a tough time to Kavcic and was very close in winning the first set but couldn’t get the most out of the break points. Kavcic, on the other hand, managed to creep his way out by winning the two and saving
four breakpoints. It was a very close contest as Kavcic won 50 points and Simone just fell short by 2 points that cost him the set. Both players showed power play and managed 2 aces apiece in the first set.
Second set was totally dominated by Simone as he came out with a new belief and thrashed Kavcic all over the place. Kavcic was totally staggered by this magical display from Simone and couldn’t settle in to the new format of the
game play by Simone. The astonishing display by the youngster forced 2 double defaults from Kavcic. Simone comprehensively defeated Kavcic in the second set and extending the match to third and final set.
Kavcic didn’t back off and came up with a separate adjusted plan to secure a victory and comfortably place himself in the 2nd round of ATP Challenger. He had the better off Simone in every aspect of the game. Simone
fought hard but not good enough to beat the Slovakian who confirmed his victory in a dashing style. Kavcic now moves on ahead into the second round where he will play the unseeded Frenchman, Benoit Paire.
