Quiros pulled in three more birdies in the day to close the round, one stroke behind the leaders.
The 31-year-old Quiros, winner of six European Tour titles, confided that his impressive performance had been a direct result of his interaction with the European Tour founding father John Jacobs the day before.
He said, “Yesterday I had a good 15-20 minutes with John, he just gave me a few tips. He helps me every single time he watches me. And with the Callaway guys, too, we changed the putter today. This is the first week that I've worked with him - I see him
more as a friend more than as a coach. He's been working for the Spanish Federation for a while, at the same time that I was an amateur over there - I have a good relationship with him. He's a very nice person”.
Quiros also said that his strong opening round in the event has been a result of his stronger putting, a direct result from the advice he received from Jacobs.
The 31-year-old Spaniard who won twice on the tour last year, the Dubai Desert Classic in February and Dubai World Championship in December, surging on the Official World Golf Rankings (OWGR).
He was also hoping to perform well in the Masters this year in order to make space for the Ryder Cup in October but finished for a sloppy performance, missing the halfway cut at the treacherous Augusta National.
World number two Luke Donald pulled in a decent four-under, 68 to stay within the stones throw away from the top slot and will be hoping to perform better in the second round of the event.
Donald considers the course as the one that suits his style of game and is the defending champion in the event this year.
He has special reverence for the course as he soared to the top of the Official World Golf Rankings (OWGR) for the first time in his career when he defeated Lee Westwood on the second Playoff last year.
World number one Rory McIlory fell for a disappointing two-over, 74 on the opening day and looked dejected and battered.
He is likely to lose his world number one spot in case he fails to make the halfway cut in the star-studded event.
