Blazing guns go silent in the First round of BMW PGA Championship: Wrap-up Part-1
The opening round of the star-studded BMW PGA Championship kicked off with some splendid performances from the top-ranked players in the world.
Two of the relatively less famous players on the tour, Scotsman David Drysdale and Irishman Peter Lawrie are now sharing the opening round lead at the scenic Wentworth club.
One of the most sought after events on the European Tour calendar, often touted as the fifth major, is being played among no fewer than 14 major winners and three top players in the world.
Drysdale, the 37-year-old professional golfer who has been part of the European Tour fields for a considerable period of time is still searching for his maiden European Tour victory.
An impressive six-under, 66 on the opening day has inflated his chances of surging to the top over the weekend.
The Scotsman started off from front carding four birdies in the nine-hole haul and made the turn to an equally impressive back nine, dropping just one shot throughout the day.
Making up for the loss at par-four, 13th, Drysdale struck on a gold mine when his approach on the last hole found water but bounced back to find the green.
He would, otherwise, never have surged to the top of the leaderboard.
He said, "You could hit 1,000 balls and never have it happen again. I don't know what it hit - maybe a fish. It was a massive break. I don't think I can say what I would have thought if I had taken six or seven there”.
Drsydale closed the round with a six-under, 66, carding an impressive 31 on the front and 35 on the back to settle for the lead with Irishman Lawrie.
The veteran is poised at 290 on the Official World Golf Rankings (OWGR) and desperately needs a break to retain his tour card for the next season.
Having won twice on the Challenge Tour, Drysdale has some impressive runner up finish in his career but has never won a title on the mainstream tour so far.
Turning professional in the year 1995, Drysdale has made it to the European Tour through the qualifying rounds and has seldom made his way through the ranking points on the Challenge Tour.
