Lawrie, on the other hand, pulled in a magical round of six-under, 66, without dropping a shot through the 18-hole stretch.
Starting his bid from the front, Lawrie carded a welcome birdie on the second and carded a massive eagle on par-five, 4th to make an early charge on the leaderboard.
With an early booster shot with an eagle, Lawrie carded two consecutive birdies to make the turn with the lowest front of the day with 30.
He made the turn for a comparatively less impressive back nine, carding only one birdie through the nine-hole stretch.
Lawrie said, "I played so well in practice that I was kind of very nervous starting out. I missed a couple coming in, but 66 can't be sneezed at. The course is set up great for me - I'm not one of the longest hitters on Tour, but one of the straightest.

The Irishman is in search of his eighth European Tour victory and has done well through the start of the season to stay in contention so far.
Bringing a successful end to his longstanding winless drought last year, the 1999 Open Champion is on a blistering ride to success and has stumbled on a late reincarnation of form and putting.
He won his first event on the European Tour, the Open de Andalucía last year after a lapse of nine long years and went over to card another victory earlier this year, the Commercialbank Qatar Masters.
His victory in February this year speaks volumes of his excellent form when he landed the title by four strokes from the nearest contenders Jason Day and Pete Hanson.
Five players are contending for the second spot on the leaderboard which includes Welshman Jamie Donaldson, Englishman Justin Rose, Swedes Niclas Fasth and Richard S Johnson, and Spaniard Alvaro Quiros.
Rose had a fine opening day at the scenic Wentworth, completely opposite to what he expected after experiencing a Vertigo strain earlier in the morning.
