I am such a mess when it comes to bleach..

Is the bleach alternative just as good as regular bleach for Whites?!?!?

Or am I stuck with always using plain old bleach?

Any other suggestions?

Thanks!!

  1. Bleach is better for whites than bleach alternatives which are just oxygen bleaches, a better alternative would be to use one cup of White Vinegar in the hottest water your clothes can handle and set on full cycle then put in the dryer, do not add any bleach or detergent or fabric softner as it is dangerous to mix bleach and vinegar hazardous fumes can result and by adding detergent and fabric softners this would interfere with vinegars whitening action, or for whiter clothes such as whites being whitened hang on line in direct sunlight, do not dry colors in direct sunlight as this could cause fading Vinegar will whiten clothes and remove residues left by detergents also remove stains and odors it is an all purpose cleaner/degreaser and less expensive than fabric softner

Next laundry loads you can add vinegar to the fabric softner dispenser if desired to take the place of your fabric softner if you prefer, or pour in half cup in the rinse cycle this will soften and lessen static cling and remove the odors and residues left by detergents Good Luck !

  2. I actually have lots of luck with the oxy products for my whites. Bleach is hard on fabric fibers breaking them down and eventually turning them yellow.  Oh and don't bleach anything white with spandex in it...will yellow that right away.

  3. Chlorine bleach is a reducing agent that breaks down the molecular structure of dyes (like those used in colored fabrics) and various organic stains (grass, blood, dirt, sweat, etc.). This changes the type of light that gets reflected to something outside of the visible spectrum. For example, if a cloth is dyed red, the molecular structure of the dye reflects red and absorbs all other colors. When chlorine bleach is applied, the fabric no longer reflects a visible red. So, you're left with the original color of the fabric (white).

Oxygen bleaches oxidize organic stains, which changes their molecular structure to not be visible. But, it does not affect the dyes used in coloring fabrics. That's why you can use it on colored clothing.

When washing whites - particularly sheets, towels, socks, underwear, etc. - chlorine bleach is preferred. Not only does it do a better job of whitening than the oxygen bleach, it also disinfects better.

  4. I have oxiclean and biz double action which I think are waste of money.

    The regular bleach is better

  5. The regular bleach works better for whites.

  6. like she said.. regular works best.. but you can use the alternative.
