Bleach ruins colored load done after white load

I will do a load of whites with bleach. The next load maybe colored articles such as towls. I have ruined a number of items with bleach that seems to remain in the washer after the load of whites. Why isn't all of the bleach out of the washer after the 1st load is finished?
