Question:

Bleaching Reptile Wood?

Well I cleaned my dead snakes cage out with 1 part bleach 30 parts water and I stuck the wood in there too. Driftwood and some other one.

Well I feel like I regret doing that because im getting a baby snake in two weeks and I don't want her to die from bleach fumes or something.

The reason I'm kind of freaking out is that my dad is buying her and he said he wouldn't have the money to buy more wood for her cage so I heard I could bleach it. Well both logs look kind of whiter and I know it's from the bleach and I rinsed them over and over and over and I even poured two pitchers of boiling water on them and im letting them sun dry right now.

Should they be that whitish color? or am I screwed now?

  1. You can put the wood in the oven at 300 degrees for maybe 15-20 minutes.

First off how did your snake die in the first place? Maybe you should learn from this before buying another snake and having that die aswell.

  2. it should be alright...just let the wood sit in the sun for a week or two just to be on the safe side.  also like the other person said you can bake it.  i used to do mine at 250 - 275 F for 2 - 3 hours.

good luck with the new baby

  3. your fine. you did everything right. some might say the bleach solution was very weak. i disinfect with 1 part bleach to 6 parts water.
