Bleaching of teeth- Facts and tall claims?

I have been using plasma arc (Litex Dentamerica) along with everbrite power bleach kit since last 2 yrs and have carried out bleaching for many patients. I never found the results as dramatic as claimed by the manufacturer or as advertised in many websites. Am i missing out something during preparation or my expectations too high. Dental colleagues kindly share your experiences.

  1. We have used several brands of "Power Bleach" in offices I have worked in.They all work about the same. I have used Rembrandt Sapphire, Ultradent's brand(no light required) and Discus Dental's Zoom. They all work, but you will get the best results with a follow up of take home tray whitening for 5-7 days. I look at the in -office procedure as a jump start to the whitening process and not the final product. I know that some systems claim to not need this, but have found that this works the best and gives the longest lasting results.

I change the whitening solution every 10-15 minutes and make sure to pumice the teeth prior to starting the process. I also use a product called GrinRx before the first application of whitening solution and to remove the solution . It is a surfactant and I find that it does help enhance the process. You can buy it through a professional website.

Also, if a person starts out rather dark and on the grayer scale, your results will not be as dramatic. The best results seem to be on patients in the yellow-brown scale and not too dark to begin with. No matter what type of whitening you use, it all has some relapse and needs to be maintained. That is why we make trays for our patients, even if they have great results with the in-office whitening.
