Bless Me, Ultima: Tony's uncle...?

Question

My question is: When Tony's uncle, Lucas was cursed by the witches, Ultima insisted Tony to come to the healing process.

Tony felt sick and had a fever during the healing...

Why did he feel sick? Did the curse tranfer to Tony's body? How did this event help Tony into growing up? (Since Bless Me, Ultima is a bildungsroman)

i had to read this book for decathlon. my interpretation was that ultima had to use some dark arts to combat the powerful magic that cursed him. this is what it think made tony sick.  i do not have access to the book currently, but i recall that ultima said something that hinted use of evil.
