Question:

Blighted Ovum...again.?

Hi,

Im 23 and was told at my 8 wk ultrasound yesterday that I have a Blighted Ovum...

This happened about 9 months ago. I was told at my 6 wk ultrasound, and I had a miscarriage 3 wks later.

I know this is a very common thing, but given I am young and healthy I am shocked this has happened twice. My first pregnancy was absolutely fine, I have a beautiful 3yr old girl.

Is a Belighted Ovum purely bad luck - is there nothing I can do to help prevent it a 3rd time?

Thanks!

  2. Blighted ovum is when a sperm fertalizes an empty egg.  I don't think there is anything you can do to prevent it.

  3. Sometimes multiple blighted ovums can be due to a chromosomal abnormality (it's your bodies way of rejecting a pregnancy that isn't viable). I don't know if they would do anything after two but I know if you've had more than three you can request they test the tissue or something like that to have a look for these abnormalities. It's worthwhile having a chat to your dr about this. Maybe doing an internet search on it would be worthwhile too. I'm so sorry for your loss I've had a blighted ovum in the past it's not nice.
