Blind Luck to test her own mettle in the Lady’s Secret before the Breeders’ Cup Ladies Classic
The last year 3-year-old champion filly, Blind Luck, kicked off the season with back to back runner-up finishes at Santa Anita, in the Grade 2 El Encino and Grade 2 La Canada Stakes, which added to her previous three, making it a string of 5 consecutive
second place finishes.
Entered Garrett Gomez, the Eclipse award winning jockey of 2007 and 2008, and the 4-year-old mare found herself a perfect rider.
The jockey guided the way and Blind Luck started doing what she does best, winning.
The daughter of Pollard’s Vision, started steam rolling whatever was dished out in front of her, and trainer Jerry Hollendorfer started thinking about the Breeders’ Cup Ladies Classic, the race which she couldn’t win last year and turned in a runner-up performance.
Stacking up wins would definitely help rectify that, and that’s exactly what she has been doing after getting most of the summer off.
The late running sensation, Blind Luck, under Garrett Gomez, won the Grade 2 La Troienne on 6 May, at Churchill Downs.
On 18 June, at Hollywood Park, she landed the Grade 1 Vanity Handicap, over a distance of 1 1/8 miles, and over a surface she hasn’t run since June, last year.
Hollywood Park’s Poly Track gave proof of her versatility as she covered the distance in 1 minute and 50.89 seconds.
In the Grade 2 Delaware Handicap, she defeated her divisional rival, Havre de Grace, and has now banked $3,279,520. In 21 races, she now holds 12 wins, 7 runner-up finishes and two third place finishes.
Trainer Jerry Hollendorfer has his eyes on a return to Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Ladies Classic on 4 November.
However, before the big goal, Blind Luck has to go through a 1 1/16 mile test in the Grade 1 Lady’s Secret at Santa Anita Park on 1 October.
Blind Luck should be well favoured against the seven fillies and mares. It’s an important race for Blind Luck and her rivals, because winning it would gain her an automatic berth in the Ladies Classic.
However, Blind Luck, like her main rivals, Ultra Bend and Ask the Moon, has already secured a place in the starting gate for the Churchill Downs special feature race for fillies and mares on 4 November.
