Question:

Blind puppy bumping into other dogs ?

I have a blind Doberman puppy she is almost 10 weeks old, I also have 7 other dogs, various breeds, she has become used to the layout of our house now and is avoiding furniture etc but is bumping into the other dogs who obviously just lie down where they choose, the other dogs are reacting to this as though they think she is playing and are either just moving themselves or engaging in play with her, why is she not using her nose more to learn that the dogs are in the way?

Does anyone know of any useful websites for owners of blind dogs?

She will have completed her vaccinations soon and will be ready for socialisation, I am going to take her to puppy socialisation as well as taking her to as many different situations as I can to meet people and dogs, I know how to socialise a dog however any advice from other owners who have trained and socialised blind puppies would be welcome.

  1. I would think she wants to play with your other dogs.  Maybe she is bumping into them, so she can play with them.  My dogs used to walk into my legs and I would guide them so they could get around.  When Andy was little, he would l**k the older dogs on the nose, and lead them around to the food and water and potty areas.  He knew they were sick, it was just his way of helping.  I think she just wants to play.

  2. ur pup is still young and will need more time to work out scents to judge where the other dogs are.  but don't worry he will, and i am amased he learnt layout of house so well.  glad to hear that u have taken on a blind pup, alot of people wouldn't which is sad.  every dog deserves a loving home.  u'll be amazed on how ur dog will becum adjusted to being blind.  so good luck with all ur dogs and look after them all.

  3. She's still very young, and its still really early days. Its great that she has learned the layout of the house so soon, but obviously, its going to take a while to recognise the scent of each individual dog. It sounds like you're doing everything right so far....other than continuing with the socialisation, there's not a great deal you can do to speed up the process. Just continue as you are....and good luck with your Dobie.

  4. I found a few sites but I only went through one search engine.  If you search 'training a blind puppy' in different search engines you may find more than I have.

These sites will give good advice & ideas as to how to work with her.

Good luck & much happiness with her.

  5. Relax, she will get better as her sense of smell gets better, and learns how to use it. Remember, she is only 10 weeks old, and Rome wasn't built in a day.
