Question:

Blindness after laser surgery?

by  |  earlier

My father had laser surgery for glaucoma about a month ago. It was a very difficult surgery and the surgeon told him it was one of the worst he has seen. His vision was very blurry for a while after (much longer than his other eye which he had done the year before). Today I spoke with him and he told me that he completely lost his vision in his eye today, totally blind in that one eye.

Does anyone know about this - if there is anything that can be done - what we should do next?

Thanks

  1. Follow up with the doctor right away. I can understand how scary this must seem. Call the doctor's office right away and find out what to do and if this a normal healing process or what should be done now. If you are not comfortable with that doctor, go to another specialist. This could be something treatable (the start of an infection for instance). If your dad won't call and he lives far away, call the office yourself and explain what your dad has told you. Ask them to follow up with your dad directly.

  2. you might be better served if you were went to the fda.com and researched them and posed the same question.. doubt if they can be of any real help but. its a start..

my very best of wishes to you and ESP. your dad..... as I am in the process of having to leave a govt. job that I have really enjoyed,

  3. Blindness after the laser surgery could be the side effect of the laser surgery even though the side effect of the surgery is unknown till now.

  4. You're going to have to contact the surgeon. If you can't get a hold of him, try and visit an optimologist as soon as you guys can. It sounds like it will clear away, but it's hard to tell you over a computer. The surgery was a month ago, correct? Could be a normal healing process, even though it may sound crazy.

    Deffinately check with the surgeon.
