Question:

Blinking Yellow Traffic Light at Intersection - what do I do?

When I head down a particular street in Baltimore toward my house, there's an intersection that has on my left and right side, a stop sign - but in front of me there are no stop signs on either side, just an overhead two light blinking yellow traffic light. Half the community stops for the yellow light, some don't.... I've opted to stop only when I see other cars. What's the proper protocol? I had an angry undercover police officer tell me it's a stop sign, but why not just put a stop sign there since it'd be easily visible? Anyone know for sure?

  1. If you have a STOP sign facing you (on the right at least, and placed AT the intersection), you must STOP and give way if necessary, before proceeding WITH CAUTION.

No matter what, STOP means STOP and STOP means YOU.

Obviously you have a notorious intersection there.

    STOP is an International sign.

    -An Aussie motorist.

  2. Blinking RED lights you HAVE to stop. Blinking yellow is slow down and yield sorta thing. You don't have to stop for yellow blinking light.

  3. Its not a stop sign but you should slow down just to make sure that everything is clear and as for the police officer, he was having a bad day.....

  4. Either you are wrong, or the officer is wrong.

Blinking yellow lights mean "procede with caution."  A blinking RED light means stop, THEN procede when it is safe to do so.

If you stop, it could cause a collision when drivers who are TRYING to obey the law are caught by surprise when you stop at an intersection for no, good, reason.

  5. you dont need to stop but slow down on blinking yellow, and just proceed with care

  6. Slow down and proceed with caution. It is not a stop sign.

  7. No stop required, just be aware that there may be hazzards at this intersection. Most common trouble comes from traffic from the right or left that may assume you have to stop also and may pull in front of you thinking you are going to stop.
