Question:

Blocking foul?

Can someone explain in detail what it is? Examples? Because almost every day I play pick-up games with someone who I am almost certain commits blocking fouls. There are no refs ( just some street games) so it wouldn't get called. He plays so close that once he puts his arms up, theres almost no going around, just back. It's like he is a wall so I can't even get in the paint. His body is pretty much always on me. I swear I almost can't go forward. So, can someone explain what a blocking foul and if this is a blocking foul, explain how to call it so he can't argue the call. Rarely he does allow me to advance and we end up in the paint together sometimes in the restricted zone ( although I'm not sure the restricted zone is present at my level) where he usually puts his hands up in and blocking my shot. Now I think in the restricted zone any contact is a blocking foul and there is no charging ( correct?). Also, what can i do to score and deal with it without the foul call?

Thanks

  1. First off impeding your progress to the basket without establishing position with both feet planted firmly on the floor, is a blocking foul.  In other words, you start toward the basket, he goes to step into the lane and creates contact with his arm, leg, hip, body, he has impeded your progress to the goal by trying to slow you down, or gain an advantage, by making contact.

Conversely if he establishes position in the lane with both feet firmly planted, and then you create contact it is an offensive foul.

In pick up ball where it is call you own, I guess it depends on if you play where the defense calls their fouls, the offense calls the fouls when they get fouled, or either.  In any case it take a bit of honesty.

Once you get him into the lane or (restricted zone) give him a couple of pump fakes, get him to commit to one, then go up while he is coming down. Get him to jump at you and cause contact, if the D is off his feet, it is 99.9% of the time a defense foul.  Use his over agressiveness to your advantage.  Over agressive defenders are easy  to fake.  They are to eager to steal or block shots.

    Nor Cal

  2. A blocking foul is where the offensive player makes contact with the defender on the dribble while the defensive player does not have position.

A common scenario of blocking is where the offensive player drive to his right, the defensive player moves to his left pushing the offensive players body with the side of his body.
