can I lift news stories from other sites, and paste them into my blog?

is there some type of copyright issue I would be up against?

I think you would have to have permission from the site you are borrowing from.  Probably most people will be flattered, and grateful for the recognition.  Still, you need to respect the right of the author of the story to control the use of the work.
