I have lived in England for the past year but I am moving back to the States in a couple of months. So, I was wondering if you know if I can still donate blood in the United States, or if I have to wait. Please let me know where you got your information from.

  1. I would check with a local blood bank near where you will be moving. They will be able to tell you.

  2. >>You may not donate if you received a blood transfusion since 1980 in the United Kingdom (England, Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland, Channel Islands, Isle of Man, Gibraltar or Falkland Islands). This requirement is related to concerns about variant CJD, or 'mad cow' disease. Learn more about variant CJD and blood donation.

It also says that if you have spend "considerable time" in the UK you are inelegible. I dont know if they would count a year as considerable.

  3. Contact the American Red Cross. I believe UK residents  are deferred (not allowed to give blood) for a year. This also applies to members of the armed services deployed in the UK or Middle East, particularly Oman and Yemen.
