Question:

Blood type. Donors and recipients.?

As far as I know, in A blood type erythrocites have A antigen and Anti-B antibody in plasma;

In B blood type erythrocites have B antigen and Anti-A antibody in plasma;

In AB blood type erythrocites have A, B antigens but no antibodies in plasma;

In blood type 0 erythrocites haven't got any antigens but have Anti-B and anti-A antibody in plasma.

Person with blood type A can be donor to person who has A or B blood type. It can receive blood from A and 0. And here comes the question: Why person with blood type A can't give blood to someone who has 0 type while A-typed peron can receive 0 type blood? The same thing concerning the other groups'abilities to be donors and recipients.

  1. You are correct in your first paragraph, but a little off in the second.

    Type A can receive A or O

    Type B can receive B or O

    Type AB can receive A, B, or O

    Type O can only receive O

    So, if you have type A, that means you have an antibody to B and exposure to type B would cause a major transfusion reaction.  Same goes for type B.  Type O has anti-A and anti-B so they would not be able to receive either.  AB has neither so they are the universal recipient.  Type O has no antigens on its surface and therefore does not cause the antigen/antibody reactions and is the universal donor.  Hopefully that clarifies.

  2. O is the universal donor and AB is the universal recipient. Okay?

  3. A person with type 'A' can't donate to someone with type 'O' because the person with type 'O' has anti-A antibodies in their blood.  Their bodies would reject the blood.

    The opposite is possible, tho, because there are no antibodies for type 'O' blood... they have no antigens for the recipient to react to.

    A person with type O- can give to anyone and receive blood from only O- persons.

    A person with type O+ can give to anyone with AB+, A+, B+, and O+, and receive blood from people with O-/+.

    A person with type A- can give to A-/+ and AB-/+, and receive from O- and A-.

    A person with type A+ can give to A+ and AB+, and receive from O-/+ and A-/+.

    A person with type B- can give to B-/+ and AB -/+, and receive from O- and B-.

    A person with type B+ can give to B+ and AB+, and receive from O-/+ and B-/+.

    A person with type AB- can give to AB-/+, and receive from O-, A-, B-, and AB-.

    A person with type AB+ can give to AB+, and receive from any of the other blood types.

    Hope this answers your question. :)

  4. persons with group A can receive blood from A and O

    persons with group B  can receive from  B and O

    persons with group AB can receive from A,B,AB,O(all)

    persons with B blood group can receive from O only

                  If person with group A gives blood to person with group O, the ANTIBODY A of group O reacts with ANTIGEN A on RBC of blood group A.It results in clumping of blood cells or Agglutinaion which may lead to death.(O blood group has antibody A and B but antibody B of group O does not react to antigen A of group A)

                  But persons with blood group O can give blood to all

    as it does not have antigens.So antibodies of other blood groups including O blood group cannot fight with Antigens of O(bcoz they r absent)

        I hope u understood. If u did not understand mail me i will explain about it in detail.
