Hey ladies,

Anyone out there that has experience with Provera (not depo-provera)

not working for them?

Tomorrow marks my two weeks since my last 10 day pill. Last friday I had some light bleeding that lasted only for the day and left. No cramping, no PMS symptoms. It wasn't pink in color but more brownish/tanish, so it was old blood.

We've continued to BD every other dayish because I'm convinced I'm not ovulating because of all my AF problems.

So I called my MD and she wants to do another blood test to rule out pregnancy. I asked what steps she would take if the test was negative and she said we will cross that bridge when it happens. What does that mean???

We are TTC and i'm so frustrated because every month counts! I mean every month and we are going on maybe 3 months wasted waiting around for AF.

Anyone didn't have provera work for them???? What happened to you???

  1. That sucks. Provera worked for my wife - induced period a couple of times.  She has PCOS.  However, getting a period (naturally or with help of Provera)  doesn't meant it will help you get pregnant or ovulate (different med / hormones needed for that if you have fertility issues).

Provera (which is progesterone hormone) once stopped helps in shedding the uterine lining (which causes the bleeding/period).  It works quite effectively, but that is all that it does.  But you need to have a reasonably thick "lining" to begin with (can do ultrasound to find out).  The uterine lining develops at the beginning of the cycle (during the follicular stage or pre-ovulation stage) which is when most women have fertility problems.  The fact that you did have some bleeding (even if old blood) probably means either 1) Provera worked but there wasn't any lining to shed, or 2) your hormones are still out of whack (e.g. progesterone is still high).

If you do not have periods every month, or periods are very irregular and you were not on BC in the past year, best is to skip the MD (they are not specialists and frankly wasted our time) and goto a reproductive endocrinologist or fertility specialist.  Best to get thoroughly tested (especially for PCOS) before trying clomid, etc.  For example, for PCOS, metformin helps greatly (not a fertility drug).

    Good luck.

  2. I have never taken provera, only prometrium (currently taking it) and so far it has worked for me.  I really just want to wish you good luck, and I hope that af staying away for so long is because you are pregnant.  I will have my fingers crossed for you!  TONS of baby dust your way!! :o) Best Wishes!

  3. Your situation sounds very similar to mine. I had a miscarriage back in Jan 08 and haven't gotten a period since! They were quite normal before that... Anyway, I was given Provera a couple of times to "kick start" my periods. It did work, but the periods still have not come back on their own.

The thing w/Provera is that is does not help you to ovulate, which is my problem. It sounds like you have a similar problem. I was told that I might ovulate very sporadically and unpredictably, so that when we are ready I will need to take Clomid to help out. I'm guessing that when your Dr. says "we'll cross that bridge..." that is what she is referring to - possibly putting you on Clomid.
