Blowing your nose?????

when blowing your nose is it polite to do it infront of people? my familly have always done it but i did it infront of my bf (wer quite close farts are ok now) but he looked really uncomfortable about me blowing it infront of him like i was embarressing him!what are the rules on this ? i cant exactly snot all over him?
