  1. the only way to fix them, is change the gasket.

  2. Remove the head and replace the gasket. Use new head bolts. Lots of labor involved. Usually several hundred dollars.

  3. I have never heard of "getting close" to a blown gasket. Their is absolutely no warnings or indications of a head gasket failure. If it is running ok don't mess with it.

  4. Well,

It is a major job to replace a head gasket, but can be done if you have the tools and ability.  Get a Chilton's or Haynes manual and read up on the procedure.  Toyota's are not too bad.

I have had 50/50 luck with Block Seal, which you put in your radiator and is a last ditch effort.(follow directions EXACTLY).  This was on GM motors.

Indications of head gasket being blown (close?) can be any of: overheating, anti-freeze loss, oil in anti-freeze or visa verse.

    Good Luck,

    George

  5. The car is overheating, I take it?

Yeah, if you aren't mechanically inclined in any way this will have to be done by a professional, which will be costly. Replacing the head gasket itself isn't THAT involved, however, GETTING to the head gasket is.
