Question:

Blu-Ray Player for a Christmas Gift?

I'm coming down to the last minute and I need a Christmas gift for my parents. I was thinking about getting them a Blu-Ray DVD Player. The thing is, I could pay $299.99 for a Sony Blu-Ray Player or pay an extra $100 and get PS3 which has the player built-in. But if I have my parents open a PS3 on Christmas, they'll probably think I'm passing off a gift on them for myself. Should I even do the Blu-Ray Player idea?

  1. You presumably know your parents, so it's difficult for a stranger to judge. On the assumption they have an HDTV and currently rent and watch DVDs they may appreciate an HD disk player.

There are probably more movies your parents would watch on HD DVD than on Blu-ray (but it's a close call). You might want to consider that. HD DVD (which despite all the nay-saying by Blu-ray fans) is not "winning", but neither is it losing ground to Blu-ray) so it's a valid alternative ... and in some ways a preferable choice.

The PS3 is used by some home theatre installers as the preferred Blu-ray player .. so it isn't just a game machine. Thats said, depending on how your parents like things they may feel a PS3 doesn't "fit" in terms of style. And your suspicion they may feel you are really buying for you is valid (less so if you don't live at home).

Some other possible ideas: a digital camera, a electronic picture frame, a network music system, power tools, a sub-woofer, ...

  2. As stated above you will know your parents better than anyone of us could. But if it were me. I would not get them either Blue Ray or HDDVD. I would still wait for a while and see what happens. Thats just my opinion though others will most likely disagree.

Have your parents mentioned they might like this? Some of this new technology stuff is ovewhelming for some people. They might just like a gift certificate to a nice restaurant. Or if they like to go to movies give thema gift card for their favorite theater. But if you really want to get them a Blue Ray player then get them the player not the PS3. But then again hey... your parents might get into video games if given the chance. Good Luck and Merry Christmas!!

  3. stick with a normal blu-ray player due to the folowing: a ps3 is loud (fan), they probably won't ever use the other functions or care to learn how, it is easier to operate a normal blu player, it will fit with their components if you buy a blu player and not a ps3. movies are cheaper through amazon. both blockbuster and some hollywood videos carry blu-ray as does netflix. good luck.

  4. i dont think that it would please your parents and blueray player and blueray dvds are very expensive

put more details we dont know if you want to get them home appliances or something else

if you want buy an electronic magasine it is really helpful
