Question:

Blu-Ray audio questions?

I am planning on buying a blu-ray disc player NOT a ps3 and I was wondering if I can get the same audio through an optical audio cable instead of HDMI. I have a 1080p television that I will be connecting via HDMI but my reciever doesnt allow audio to be played via HDMI, only optical and coaxial (however I prefer optical) so I was wondering if I can still get the DTS-HD etc. signals from my player.

  1. Yes. ALL of my Sony Blu-Ray players have an optical port for audio OUT.

  2. If your player has a decoder in it you can hook up the analog speaker outputs to your receiver speaker input. Go to DTS or DOLBY DIGITAL.com and they show you your hook up options. Then you will have high def audio.

  3. No, it will be converted into regular DTS or Dolby 5.1. The high def sound signals are HDMI compatible only, unfortunately. It still sounds very good though ;)

  4. No.

Optical and coaxial-digital can only carry Dolby Digital and DTS audio like from a standard DVD player or a HDTV cable/sat box.

The newer un-compressed audio formats can only come out of a BluRay player if:

    - You use HDMI to a receiver, and the receiver can decode the newer formats (TrueHD, DTS-HD)

    - You use 6 analog cables from the BluRay player to 6 analog inputs on a receiver.

If your receiver has 6 analog inputs - buy 2 inexpensive component cables and hook things up this way.
