Question:

Blu-Ray or HD DVD, which format will win out?

I know Sony owns the Blu-Ray technology and a couple of movie studios to support the format. Blu-Ray holds more data. I noticed the other day that Disney is using standard DVD and Blu-Ray exclusively now for their releases, no HD DVD. Will Blu-Ray win out? I'd like your opinions before I spend $300+ on a new player.

Betamax was a better tape technology but wasn't marketed well and VHS format won out.

  1. while p**n does lead to many new innovations i hope, in this case Blu-Ray wins out... and the p**n follows, of course

    good luck

PS @supersaiyen3_99's :  most of us tech nerds already have the T drives installed on our home systems... nothing sweeter than 2T

  2. HD will win because Blu-Ray backers wont accept the p**n Industry while HD will.

Thats why VHS won over Beta - p**n

  3. blu ray

  4. Blue ray has more "power." Men like power. More then we need most of the time. Blue-ray will win.

  5. i agree with Godless the p**n industry will determine which format will ultimately win out.

  6. i am pretty sure that blu ray will rule out hd dvd but then again....they both are strong on their own parts.  HD dvd leaves it so its format is the same as older dvds  but blu ray takes a new programming format so in the end.  HDDVD may end up being a more suitable choice for movies but blu ray will be ruled as choice for storing data, playing ps3 and what not.  just watch out for the new 1 terabyte disc that will show its face in the next couple years.

  7. Combo players will.

  8. HD  DVD will ultimately win out, they flooded the market with players for $99 on Black Friday and because of that the sheer number of HD players totally trump the number of BD players.  I also own a HD DVD and have seen both formats on different televisions and I must say that HD DVD seems to be a little crisper.

  9. As far as quality both output HD signal, meaning 720p, 1080i or 1080p. As such you will not notice much diff in viewing. There are other differences to be knowledgeable of however not including costs.

    Blu-ray

    Storage capacity 25GB (single-layer)

    50GB (dual-layer)

    Transfer rate 54Mbps

Content provided by:Warner, Paramount, Fox, Disney, Sony, MGM and Lionsgate

Hardware support from: Sony, Panasonic, Philips, Samsung, Pioneer, Sharp, JVC, Hitachi, Mitsubishi, TDK, Thomson, LG, Apple, HP and Dell

Blue Ray is installed in the PS-3

    HD-DVD

    15GB (single-layer)

    30GB (dual-layer

    Transfer rate 36.55Mbps

Content provided by: Warner, Paramount and Universal

    Hardware support from: Tosheba

As of November 2007, HD DVD has the advantage in maximum disc capacity, 51 GB triple-layer versus 50 GB dual-layer) but no titles have yet been released on the triple-layer format. Blue Ray is said to be developing a 200 MB disc, it's unknown at this time whether the final specification will be compatible with current players. As of November 2007 44% of Blu-ray titles use the 50 GB disc and 56% use the 25 GB disc while almost all HD DVD movies are in the 30 GB dual layer format. Both HD DVD and Blu-ray Disc support the 24p (traditional movie) frame rate . In terms of audio, there are some differences and there are also regional coding differences. Blu ray arguably holding the competative edge at this point..

  10. Blu Ray, like you said its marketing.

Anticipate Blu Ray making another announcement about Warner going to just Blu Ray DVDs soon. It is supposed to be announced at CES convention coming up. That will shift 70% of all studios just doing Blu Ray, no HDDVD. Sony has invested too much to fail at this point and will sink whatever money they need to now to crush the competition because once they do, they will make a huge profit.

  11. if Warner Bros do in fact switch to blue only then the war will be over fast and blue ray will win. If they continue to support both we are in for a long lose, lose battle, ie sacd/dvda
