  1. blue ray

  2. i have seen Blu Ray and HD DVD movies playing side to side and the Blu Ray movies had a sharper picture

  3. Neither has better picture quality than the other but that no longer matters.

As of Fridays announcement that Warner would make only BD movies after May '08, the winner of the war has been declared. Blu-Ray. I thought it might take a year for it to happen but now I think it will be VERY soon that HD DVD closes up shop.

HD DVD was hit hard and is scrambling to recover. They were surprised by Warners move to back BD and even cancelled the HD DVD event at this years CES.

Warner chose to do this because Blu-Rays have outsold HD DVDs 2-1. In Europe it was 3-1 in favor or BD and in Japan it was 10-1 in favor of BD. Warner only wants to sell more movies.

Many people beleive that this spells the end of HD DVD and a win for BD, me among them

Furthermore the NY Times reported this afternoon that both Paramount and Universal (who were the only HD DVD exclusive studios left) are no longer HD DVD exclusive.

I know that HD DVD will fight back. Expect great deals and free offers from HD DVD. But realistically the war is over. (1/13 Toshiba just lowered prices to$150-$399 on the players)

Ultimately the only way for consumers to win is for one of them to win so that all of the studios will make HD movies in a format accessable to everyone. I also expect that now that Blu-Ray has won you will see second and third tier manufacturers to make players driving the price to $100 by 2009-1010. Funai just announce one for $299.

They have to make this happen or the window is going to close and internet HD movies are going to take over before BD has a chance to flourish. LG and Netflick have already announced an internet movie device and VUDU's machine is already available.

Buy now or buy later but buy Blu-Ray.

Incedentally Warner took no money to select Blu-Ray. But Paramount and Universal each took $150 Mil to select HD DVD. But that is nothing but a drop in the bucket compared to what they lose if their movies aren't available to the format consumers choose to buy.

And those of you saying that now Sony will jack up the prices of Blu-Ray players don't know how a competitve market works. Sony can't charge more than customers are willing to pay. If they boost the price on their machines then people will buy a different brand.

  4. hd

  5. Check out the latest reports from CES, Warner and now Paramount have moved over to Blu-Ray, starting in a few months:

As far as picture quality goes, both are about equal, but Blu ray is getting almost all of the studio support.

Sucks for me, I have a HD-DVD player!

  6. Just Peachy must work for sony.

Why do people cling to products with a catchy name?????

HDDVD AND BLURAY PROVIDE ESSENTIALLY THE SAME THING!!!!!!!!!!!! HIGH DEFINITION VIDEO AND AUDIO PLAIN AND SIMPLE.

NEITHER is better than the other in terms of quality. Wait till the so called war is over and buy what were stuck with.

  7. Blu Ray all the way! It is amazing! Blu-ray Disc

Blu-ray, also known as Blu-ray Disc (BD), is the name of a next-generation optical disc format jointly developed by the Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA), a group of the world's leading consumer electronics, personal computer and media manufacturers (including Apple, Dell, Hitachi, HP, JVC, LG, Mitsubishi, Panasonic, Pioneer, Philips, Samsung, Sharp, Sony, TDK and Thomson). The format was developed to enable recording, rewriting and playback of high-definition video (HD), as well as storing large amounts of data. The format offers more than five times the storage capacity of traditional DVDs and can hold up to 25GB on a single-layer disc and 50GB on a dual-layer disc. This extra capacity combined with the use of advanced video and audio codecs will offer consumers an unprecedented HD experience.

While current optical disc technologies such as DVD, DVD±R, DVD±RW, and DVD-RAM rely on a red laser to read and write data, the new format uses a blue-violet laser instead, hence the name Blu-ray. Despite the different type of lasers used, Blu-ray products can easily be made backwards compatible with CDs and DVDs through the use of a BD/DVD/CD compatible optical pickup unit. The benefit of using a blue-violet laser (405nm) is that it has a shorter wavelength than a red laser (650nm), which makes it possible to focus the laser spot with even greater precision. This allows data to be packed more tightly and stored in less space, so it's possible to fit more data on the disc even though it's the same size as a CD/DVD. This together with the change of numerical aperture to 0.85 is what enables Blu-ray Discs to hold 25GB/50GB.

Blu-ray is currently supported by more than 180 of the world's leading consumer electronics, personal computer, recording media, video game and music companies. The format also has broad support from the major movie studios as a successor to today's DVD format. In fact, seven of the eight major movie studios (Disney, Fox, Warner, Paramount, Sony, Lionsgate and MGM) have released movies in the Blu-ray format and six of them (Disney, Fox, Sony, Warner, Lionsgate and MGM) are releasing their movies exclusively in the Blu-ray format. Many studios have also announced that they will begin releasing new feature films on Blu-ray Disc day-and-date with DVD, as well as a continuous slate of catalog titles every month. For more information about Blu-ray movies, check out our Blu-ray movies and Blu-ray reviews section which offers information about new and upcoming Blu-ray releases, as well as what movies are currently available in the Blu-ray format.

Hope that this helps you out!

  8. They have the same picture quality.  Blu Ray has more storage capacity. HD DVD is cheaper to make and sell.

I wonder if the playstation helped the sale of Blu Ray movies.

The techies and gamers have spoken. Now it time for the average joe which hasn't bought an hdtv or hd player to decide. The adult industry still has makes more titles on HDdvd than Blu Ray.

Then when HDCP comes out you wont be able to copy movies. Then you'll all go back to regular DVD movies.  What a waste of time.  lol

  9. the picture quality of the two formats is exactly the same. both support a max resolution of 1080p, there is quite litterally no visual difference.

if you are looking to buy a new HD content player, definitely go with blu-ray. with the recent announcement of Warner bros.. studios moving over to blu-ray. the "format war" is essentially over as blu-ray now has 75% of hollywood studio support. furthermore it is rumored that the remaining HD-DVD supporters, paramount and universal, will be switching to blu-ray within the next couple of months
