  1. I work for Sears and I know you're going to be safe for more than 3 years. Heck, they still make VHS tapes in lieu of DVD being so popular for the last 6-7 years. Blu-Ray will win this battle. HD DVD is making less and less movies, coupled with their crashing prices. They are on life support. I think the movie companies who signed with HD DVD will make the switch once the plug gets pulled on HD DVD. Unless you have a PS3, it's not worth $400 to spend on a player right now. Prices will surely fall within the next 1-1.5 years if you can wait. They are also backwards compatible, so you don't have to burn your DVD collection anytime soon.

  2. Blu-ray represents about 1% of disk sales (DVD plus Blu-ray).

Blu-ray is, and will probably remain, a premium priced niche format and alternative to DVD ... not a replacement.

You have no reason to worry about DVD being discontinued anytime soon ... in fact they will probably still be around after blu-ray is replaced by Blu-ray 2 (or whatever).

Harry Potter is already out on DVD (at least about 5 of them are)

  3. They will have to keep lower end DVD's too just like they have premium and cheaper brands of beer.  Not everyone is willing to buy movies if they cost $40 per unit.  Movie companies will realize this and release productions in a couple of formats.

  4. you will be safe for a while. Probably 2 or 3 years at a guess.

  5. DVDs will probably be around for 10 years or so. That is about how long the complete VHS to DVD transition took. There probably won't be a replacement disk for Blu-Ray because downloadable is going to replace the whole purchase model.

You can expect Harry Potter on Blu-Ray before too long but I am sure you will still be able to get the whole series on DVD as well.

HD DVD on Life support? Where have you been Cupper? HD DVD died already, they just aren't finished burying it yet. Toshiba isn't going to make it anymore and all the movie studios have gone to Blu-Ray.
