  1. The manual should so information. If it doesn't, then the typical set up if you room allows it is as follows:

-Center channel below or on top of tv (depending on height)

-right and left front speakers on side of tv

-right and left speakers next to main seating area

-final two speakers go behind the seating area

  2. The center should be placed above or below the main sitting position with the center speaker aimed directly at the listeners head.

Main Right and Left should be placed as far apart from each other where the main sitting position makes a perfect triangle.  The speakers should be "toed in" to the main sitting position.

Left and Right side speakers should be placed a few feet above head level about 1-2 feet behind the listener, this will give you a diffuse sound so the speakers aren't aimed directly at you.  A Bi-pole speaker is best for this application.  You want the sound of rain (example) to surround you not being forced at you.

Finally the back surround speakers according to THX should be about 3 feet apart and in the middle of the back wall.  Dolby Labs suggests the two back speakers should be as far apart as the main speakers for a more diffuse sound field.

The sub can be placed anywhere since bass is non directional, but have a friend or family member move the sub while you sit in the main sitting position so that you can hear the best bass response.  Most will suggest a corner wall placement since the two walls will enhance the bass by 3db, but be warned an overabundance of bass can be a bad thing and drown out the upper frequencies, so placement, phase control and gain (volume) settings are important.  You want the bass to be tight and controlled and to blend in well with the speakers.  I always recommend SVS or Hsu subs as the best bang for the buck, they are internet brand only but there simple 500.00 sub will beat out most store bought subs costing thousands.

    Good luck and happy listening.

  3. The manual would be a good place to start, it shows recommended settings of the speakers.  At least a good unit's manual does.
